Snorkelling and Diving on Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is the one place in Vietnam where travellers of any nationality may stay up to 30 days without a visa — but only if you arrive directly and stay on the island. Transit through another Vietnamese airport on the way is covered; a stop on the mainland is not, and then the ordinary Vietnamese entry rules apply. Check your own nationality against the current rules before you fly.

November to April is the dry season: calm sea, reliable boat trips, best visibility for snorkelling, and the highest prices. May to October brings rain, rougher water on the west coast and cancellations — but also much lower rates, greener forest and fuller waterfalls inland. There is no month when the sea is cold; it stays around 27 to 30 degrees all year.

In the wet season, yes — sometimes on the morning itself, when the swell comes up on the west coast. Operators refund or rebook, and almost every tour can also be cancelled free by you up to 24 hours before. In the dry season cancellations are rare and the problem is the opposite one: the good boats fill up days ahead.

In practice, no. Vietnam only recognises foreign driving licences issued under the 1968 convention for cars, and the international rental chains do not operate here. Visitors get around by rented scooter, by Grab, by taxi or by hiring a car with a driver — which is also what most island tours include anyway.

Fast ferries run from two mainland ports: Ha Tien takes about an hour and twenty minutes, Rach Gia about two hours and twenty, and both arrive at Bai Vong on the east coast. Note that arriving this way means you have been on the mainland first, which changes your visa situation — see the first question.

Inside the resorts, yes. Outside them it is ordinary Vietnam, with building sites, litter on some verges and a lot of unfinished construction — the island has been developed fast and not evenly. The nightlife outside Duong Dong and Sunset Town is thin. If you want a finished, dense resort strip, Thailand does it better; if you want good water, empty beaches in the north and low prices, this island delivers.
